MOMA Docent Interview

Last Tuesday I interviewed for a volunteer docent position at MOMA in San Francisco. How I got the interview is another story. After introductions and an explanation of the docent training and responsibilities,  I was paired with the manager of the docent program to take a walk into the gallery. When we entered on of the galleries, she said, "pick out a painting and a sculpture and tell me about it". Well, being an expert on the work of German artist Anselm Kiefer, it was no problem - Hah!

After discussing a very large, dark, gloomy, and obscure work of art on the wall, she pointed to a large sculpture of a lead airplane/jet bomber with a glass tetrahedron positioned on the wing and said, "...tell me about that".  What would you have said?

After I stumbled around trying to come up with some sense of it, she said it was based or inspired by Albrecht Durer's 1513 print called "Melencolia 1", which made everything clear - Hah again!

Who knows if I passed the test or not. They are interviewing about 60 people for 17 open positions and will decide by next week. If I do make the cut, it would be a commitment to six months of training and art history courses and then a two year commitment to lead docent tours. We'll see.

Sailing San Francisco Bay

We went up to Alameda with Judy on Saturday to meet Joe and his new boat. He just took ownership of a 40' sailboat - his lifelong dream. We sailed out under the Bay Bridge and out to Alcatraz  and back on a beautiful, sunny day. We had our lunch on the boat and took turns at the helm - great day!

Daddy Long Legs - TheaterWorks

We went to this musical production at TheaterWorks in Mountain View last night. It was one of the best ones we have seen there. There were only two actors on stage and the story held our attention for the whole program.

The plot (1909...) was that a young orphan girl is given a gift of a college education from an unknown man whose only condition was that she write him letters each month telling of her progress and experiences and that he would never respond. The actors sing the contents of the letters independent of each other. She envisions the unknown man as old, but in reality he is young, rich, charitable, and reclusive and over time falls in love with her through the letters and devises a way to meet her and become her friend without divulging his true identity. You can probably guess the ending.

These pictures are pretty bad and weird because the lighting was poor.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Artie

On Monday, 1/25/09, Artie received  the 2009 Lifetime Achievement from The Heritage Preservation League of Folsom for all her work over the years to support the history of the city. We took her to the general meeting of the League where they presented the awards to Artie and several others who had worked for preservation of Folsom history.

It was amazing to see the fuss people made over her. She is loved by many people.

The Four Seasons in Stained Glass

When we were in Chicago last year, we went out on Navy Pier and they had a display of stained glass windows that were taken out of some of the old buildings/mansions that were torn down. Although the colors were fantastic, I cropped my photos and turned them into black/white for submitting to a SV Photo Club competition.

Carribean Sea Birds

With the exception of the Pelicans, these sea birds followed the ship constantly and were so graceful that you could watch them all day.  I'm not sure what kind they were, so need some help.  Click on the photo for a closer look.
